‘Conclave’ Director Edward Berger Discusses How Netflix Revitalized the Film Industry

Edward Berger Discusses the Future of Cinema: A Focus on Authenticity and Collaboration

In a recent conversation at the MIA Market in Rome, acclaimed filmmaker Edward Berger, known for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, shared insights on the evolving landscape of cinema amidst the growing influence of streaming platforms.

Berger emphasized that there is no definitive right or wrong approach to filmmaking in today’s environment. "Each film will find its own audience," he remarked, highlighting how both theatrical releases and streaming services contribute positively to the industry by providing more options for viewers.

He acknowledged the role of major streaming services like Netflix in revitalizing the film business, calling them "real disruptors." In his view, the industry’s shift towards embracing fresh ideas and audiences was greatly influenced by the pandemic, which altered consumption patterns and expectations around film.

Reflecting on his own career, Berger stated that learning from failures has been instrumental in shaping his path as a filmmaker. He recounted how his experience working on World War Z led him to question his direction, only to find clarity when collaborating with Nele Mueller-Stoefen on Jack, a poignant story of two neglected brothers in Berlin.

Berger’s gratitude extended to the international audience that recognized the potential in Jack, noting, "The people who showed up were the foreigners, not the Germans." This acknowledgment of interest from overseas filmmakers ultimately paved the way for Conclave, his latest project set in the Vatican and filmed at the historic Cinecittà Studios in Rome.

"The atmosphere there is inspiring; you can almost feel Fellini’s presence," Berger reflected about the film’s setting. His English-language debut not only grossed an impressive $127 million globally but also garnered multiple Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, solidifying his status in Hollywood.

In addition to Conclave, Berger recently released Ballad of a Small Player, featuring Colin Farrell, and is working on a unique project titled Submerged, which incorporates Apple Immersive Video for new viewing experiences with the Apple Vision Pro device. He is also producing the action thriller Helo, directed by Andrés Baiz, under his Nine Hours banner.

For Berger, remaining engaged creatively is vital. "I want to constantly have several projects in motion," he stated, recognizing the natural ebb and flow of filmmaking. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, "I’m human, and so are you—we all make mistakes, and together, we can uncover the truth in our stories."

Ultimately, Berger’s insights reveal a commitment to authenticity and a collaborative spirit in filmmaking, ensuring that his voice and vision remain relevant in a transforming industry.
