“Obsession” topped the charts at this year’s Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, clinching five awards, including accolades for Best Director, awarded to Curry Barker, and Best Lead Performance, awarded to Inde Navarrette.
The fan-driven ceremony, which recognizes outstanding achievements in horror film, television, and gaming, aired on Shudder this past Sunday and was hosted by actor Devon Sawa (“Final Destination,” “Chucky”). Highlighting the event were standout moments like Lin Shaye, star of “Insidious,” presenting the evening’s final award to “Obsession,” and Dee Wallace, known for her role in “Cujo,” awarding the Goodest Boy trophy to Indy, the Nova Scotia retriever featured in “Good Boy.”
Michael Varrati, who penned and directed the awards ceremony, shared, “Similar to the genre it celebrates, part of the joy of the Chainsaw Awards is our ability to take risks. Horror enthusiasts not only want to honor the films and talents that keep them engaged, but they also desire to do so in a way that reflects their passion for the genre.” Varrati emphasized that this includes recognizing beloved animal performances and sending the host into entertaining phobias, such as navigating a corn maze filled with surprises.
“Backrooms” followed closely behind with three wins, snagging the awards for Best First Feature, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. “Widow’s Bay” was awarded Best Series, while “Resident Evil: Requiem” took the title for Best Video Game.
Among the special recognitions of the night, Joe Bird, known for “Talk to Me” and “Leviticus,” received the Editor’s Eyeball Award, celebrating his rising influence in the horror genre. A second Editor’s Eyeball Award was given to co-presenter James A. Janisse, acknowledging him and Chelsea Rebecca for launching the horror-centric YouTube channel, “Dead Meat.”
The ceremony was executive produced by Armen Aghaeian, Tara Ansley, and Abhi Goel, with Amanda Grace Collins taking the lead as producer, while Phil Nobile Jr. and Varrati served as co-producers.
