WARNING: The following article includes spoilers for Clayface
In the latest installment from DC Studios, the character of Clayface, played by Tom Rhys Harries, showcases his unique ability to transform, including a notable and unexpected appearance.
Amid speculation about guest appearances, director James Watkins has confirmed that Aaron Paul makes a cameo in the film, portraying Matt’s father, Jimmy “One Nut” Hagen, who raised him in Gotham’s tough neighborhoods.
“He has a really brief Easter egg moment,” Watkins shared with Entertainment Weekly.
Although scenes featuring Paul as Matt’s father were eventually removed from the cut, his appearance notably occurs during the intense Club Vesuvius sequence. Here, Matt utilizes his shape-shifting powers to combat Szabo’s (David Dencik) henchmen, ultimately adopting his father’s likeness to exact revenge on the gangster (Enzo Squillino Jr.) responsible for his father’s demise years prior.
“While developing the character, we asked ourselves how much of Matt is shaped by his past and how much he embodies the everyman experience,” the director reflected. “At one point, we considered the theme of the ‘sins of the father’.”
Watkins elaborated, “However, as the script evolved, we found that the theme of revenge was more universal and relatable. Everyone has felt wronged at some point, carrying that sense of injustice, and it resonates with our desire for action, even when we feel powerless.”
Now available in theaters, Clayface features Harries as Matt Hagen, an aspiring actor whose career spirals after a brutal encounter with the mobster Szabo (Dencik), leaving him with horrific facial injuries. When he stumbles upon groundbreaking nanotechnology from Dr. Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie), Matt persuades her to help him regain his former appearance, leading to devastating side effects and a bloody path of revenge.
