Zoe Saldaña expressed heartfelt support for her fellow performers as she celebrated her victory for Emilia Pérez during the SAG Awards 2025 event.
Saldaña was awarded the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role at the ceremony held on Sunday. While accepting her award, she reflected on the welcoming environment she has experienced as a member of SAG-AFTRA.
“I am immensely proud to be part of a union that embraces my identity without question regarding my background, language, or pronouns,” the actress shared with the audience from the stage. “Everyone deserves the right to express who they truly are, and Emilia Pérez embodies themes of truth and love. As actors, it is imperative now more than ever that we share stories that are not only beautiful but also provoke thought within the realm of artistic freedom.”
In her speech, Saldaña did not mention her Emilia Pérez co-stars, such as Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, or the film’s director, Jacques Audiard. Recent weeks have seen Gascón embroiled in controversy due to resurfaced offensive tweets.
Other nominees in the category included Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), and Ariana Grande (Wicked). The award was presented by Keke Palmer and Colman Domingo.
This win adds to Saldaña’s string of successes leading up to next weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony, following her notable victories at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Critics’ Choice Awards.
Last year, Da’Vine Joy Randolph won in this category for her performance in The Holdovers and went on to secure the Oscar for best supporting actress.
