After twelve years and three individual films, along with a holiday special, Amanda Seyfried has expressed that she has no regrets about turning down a lead role in the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Oscar-nominated actress revealed that she felt the role of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was "just not for me." She emphasized that her decision was largely influenced by her desire to focus on her family, allowing her to decline the part that ultimately went to Zoe Saldaña.
In a recent Q&A with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Seyfried shared her thought process at the time: “I remember thinking that turning down Guardians of the Galaxy was a clear decision for me. I couldn’t see how it would succeed; the idea of a tree and a raccoon talking seemed far-fetched, and the space setting worried me. I thought, ‘If this flops, it could damage my career significantly.’”
Although Seyfried later acknowledged her misjudgment about the film’s success, she maintained that her choice was valid. “I made that decision for myself and for the future I envisioned for my family,” she explained. “I was not keen on spending hours in the makeup trailer. I’m not one for stunts, heights, or pretending to be in a completely made-up world. I need something tangible to hold on to.”
Saldaña, on the other hand, starred alongside Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in multiple films, including Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), as well as the 2022 Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Additionally, she reprised her role in both Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
