Nominees Announced
Leading the pack with five nominations, “Wicked” will compete for the best ensemble award against the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which has received four nominations, as well as “Emilia Pérez,” “Anora,” and “Conclave,” which garnered three, three, and two nominations respectively.
In the competition for best actor, contenders include Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist,” Timothée Chalamet for “A Complete Unknown,” Daniel Craig in “Queer,” Colman Domingo for “Sing Sing,” and Ralph Fiennes for “Conclave.” Meanwhile, the best actress category features Pamela Anderson in “The Last Showgirl,” Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked,” Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez,” Mikey Madison from “Anora,” and Demi Moore in “The Substance.”
Turning to television, “Shogun” aims to uphold its recent success at the Emmys and Golden Globes with five nominations. It is followed by the third season of FX’s culinary dramedy “The Bear,” which has four nominations, and Netflix’s political drama “The Diplomat,” earning three nominations.
Jane Fonda’s Honor
At 87, iconic actress Jane Fonda, who has won two Academy Awards for best actress (for “Klute” in 1972 and “Coming Home” in 1979) and an Emmy (in 1984 for the TV film “The Dollmaker”), will be recognized with a lifetime achievement award. Previous recipients include legends like Frank Sinatra, Sidney Poitier, Carol Burnett, and Barbra Streisand.
What to Watch For
On the film front, the best actress category is generating significant buzz: Demi Moore, portraying an aging actress striving to reclaim her youth in the horror film “The Substance,” will face off against breakout star Mikey Madison from “Anora.” Will Moore build on her Golden Globe momentum, having given a memorable acceptance speech about her struggles being typecast as a “popcorn actress”?
The race for best supporting actress also promises excitement, featuring Zoe Saldaña as a clever lawyer in “Emilia Pérez,” who has swept the major Oscars precursors over her rival, Ariana Grande, who portrays the cheerful witch Glinda in “Wicked.” However, “Wicked” has seen a surge in nominations at the SAGs, and the ongoing controversy surrounding social media posts by Gascón, Saldaña’s co-star, continues to affect the narratives of both Saldaña and director Jacques Audiard.
