Spoiler Alert: This article contains major plot details from Edward Berger’s Conclave.
Edward Berger’s upcoming film, Conclave, set for release in October 2024, explores the intense and secretive world of the College of Cardinals as they gather to select a new pope following the unexpected death of the previous leader. The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence, the college’s dean, alongside esteemed actors like Stanley Tucci, Isabella Rossellini, and John Lithgow. Since its debut, Conclave has garnered both critical acclaim and financial success, accumulating numerous award nominations, including eight Oscar nominations ahead of the upcoming ceremony.
The acclaim for Conclave can be attributed to its compelling performances and direction, as well as the intricate storytelling that sharpens the tension surrounding the election of a new pope. Central to the plot is Cardinal Lawrence’s strategic manipulation of voting preferences as he supports his preferred candidates while uncovering secrets about his rivals, particularly Cardinals Adeyemi (played by Lucian Msamati) and Tremblay (Lithgow). As the stakes rise, unexpected twists reveal their pasts and how they impact the election’s outcome.
Cardinal Adeyemi’s Hidden Past
At the outset, Cardinal Adeyemi emerges as a leading contender for the papacy, though his traditional views lead Cardinal Lawrence to withhold his support. A shocking twist reveals that Adeyemi fathered a secret child with Sister Shanumi, who has recently arrived at the Vatican. This revelation carries significant repercussions, not just for Adeyemi’s candidacy but for the wider conclave dynamics.
In a tense cafeteria encounter, Sister Shanumi attempts to speak to Adeyemi, but he rebuffs her, igniting suspicion among the other cardinals. Cardinal Lawrence learns of the past relationship and informs Adeyemi that his pursuit of the papacy is effectively over due to the resurfacing of his private scandal.
The Role of Sister Shanumi
Initially perceived as merely coincidental, Sister Shanumi’s presence at the conclave is later revealed to be the result of a scheme orchestrated by Cardinal Tremblay, another competitor in the papal race. Tremblay exploits her past connection with Adeyemi, seeking to undermine Adeyemi’s credibility. While Tremblay initially defends his actions by claiming they were ordered by the late pope, his actual motives remain questionable, hinting at a deeper rivalry fueled by ambition.
The film effectively illustrates the ruthless nature of the power struggle among the cardinal candidates, showcasing how dramatic alliances and betrayals shape the fate of their aspirations.
Consequences for Adeyemi and Shanumi
After the scandal erupts during the conclave, the reputation of both Adeyemi and Sister Shanumi plummets. With suspicion swirling around Adeyemi, Cardinal Lawrence intervenes to manage the fallout by arranging for Sister Shanumi’s departure from the Vatican, recognizing that her continued presence would jeopardize her role as a nun. Similarly, Adeyemi faces the reality that his chances for the papacy have been irreparably damaged, signaling a major turn in his career.
Despite the chaos, Cardinal Lawrence remains compassionate, listening to their confessions while preserving the sanctity of secrecy mandated by his vow. Unbeknownst to the other cardinals, Adeyemi’s hidden life ultimately leads to his exclusion from the papal race, demonstrating the delicate balance between personal integrity and public perception within the Catholic Church’s high-stakes environment.
Through its intricate narrative and taut character dynamics, Conclave offers a gripping exploration of ambition, morality, and the pursuit of power within a religious institution, ensuring its place as a must-watch film this fall.
