Peacock’s eagerly awaited espionage drama series, PONIES, is expanding its cast with the addition of five new main characters: Adrian Lester (known for Sandman and The Day After Tomorrow), Artjom Gilz (from Tár and Das Boot), Nicholas Podany (Saturday Night and Hello Tomorrow), Petro Ninovskyi (Shttl and Silence), and Vic Michaelis (Very Important People and Upload).
These newcomers will join lead actress Emilia Clarke, who is also an executive producer of the series, alongside Haley Lu Richardson. Currently filming in Budapest, the narrative is set in Moscow in 1977, centering on two women, Bea (Clarke) and Twila, who serve as secretaries at the American Embassy. Following the mysterious deaths of their husbands in the USSR, the women transform into CIA operatives, diving deep into a vast Cold War conspiracy while seeking justice for their personal losses.
Adrian Lester will portray Dane, the mysterious leader of the CIA Moscow station, who is skilled in keeping secrets, even his own. Artjom Gilz assumes the role of Andrei, a compelling yet threatening KGB officer exuding the charm of a 1970s rock star. Nicholas Podany plays Ray, a mid-level CIA analyst struggling for recognition at work and at home. Petro Ninovskyi takes on the character of Sasha, a Soviet technician with a surprising love for romance novels and American culture. Lastly, Vic Michaelis portrays Cheryl, an assertive embassy wife and office manager who effectively manages authority over her colleagues, including her husband Ray.
The series is co-created by Susanna Fogel (The Flight Attendant, The Spy Who Dumped Me) and David Iserson (Mr. Robot, New Girl), with Fogel also directing and co-writing. The executive production team includes Clarke and Jessica Rhoades (Black Mirror, Station Eleven), along with Mike Daniels (Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, The Village). Fogel, Iserson, and Daniels will serve as showrunners, with production handled by Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group.
Filming in Budapest utilizes the city’s historical architecture and ambiance to authentically portray Cold War-era Moscow. This project also highlights Hungary‘s emergence as a key location for international film and television production.
