Dave Chappelle Encourages the Entertainment Industry to Stay Positive

Dave Chappelle made an unexpected appearance at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, where he received the prestigious President’s Award.

During his acceptance speech, Chappelle expressed profound gratitude toward the NAACP for its century-long commitment to advocating for people of color, particularly Black individuals. He urged his fellow creatives to continue sharing their narratives.

Chappelle, who has recently won his sixth Grammy for Best Comedy Album and numerous Emmys—although he hasn’t accepted those awards in person—explained that this particular honor held special significance for him.

“This award is deeply meaningful because it comes from an institution that stands for us, for people of color and Black people,” he said, dressed sharply in a suit and tie as he received the award from NAACP president Derrick Johnson.

He commended the NAACP for its efforts to enhance the representation of Black stories in Hollywood. “They have tirelessly worked within this industry so that individuals like myself can share our stories on stage or on camera,” Chappelle remarked. “Every artist here has the power to make a difference, and tonight, I feel inspired.”

Chappelle lightheartedly added that his upbeat mood stemmed from the fact that his Netflix payments had cleared, allowing him the freedom to perform purely out of passion. He encouraged the gathered entertainers to persevere during these challenging times.

“I hope we all feel strong and motivated, despite the difficulties we face. The importance of your work is more significant now than ever, and it is uplifting to know we have one another. Community is vital,” he stated.

He also took a moment to recognize the victims of the recent wildfires near Los Angeles, particularly affecting the historic Black community of Altadena. “I want to pay tribute to everyone who has lost their homes or been displaced,” Chappelle said. “Remember, it’s okay to lean on each other in tough times. My father always said, ‘When you stumble or feel down, just remember these magic words: let’s keep it moving. Let’s keep it moving.’”

Chappelle concluded his speech by honoring director Stan Lathan, who has directed many of his stand-up specials. “Working with you, Stan, has been one of the greatest honors of my life. You are a national treasure and one of my true heroes,” he said.

This year’s NAACP Image Awards, hosted by Deon Cole, took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and were broadcast on BET and CBS, with Keke Palmer recognized as Entertainer of the Year alongside notable honorees including former Vice President Kamala Harris and the Wayans family.
