Ali Abbasi discusses the incident at the Golden Globes afterparty.

Ali Abbasi, the director behind the film The Apprentice, which features Donald Trump, recently stepped away from his representation, CAA and Entertainment 360. This decision followed a controversial incident at a Golden Globes afterparty that raised significant attention.

Reported by Deadline, the incident has caused quite a stir in Hollywood, particularly as voting for the Oscars concluded on Tuesday. Fortunately for actors Sebastian Stan, who portrayed Trump as an aspiring real estate mogul, and Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn, the situation does not affect their Oscar prospects. Abbasi, who gained recognition after his previous acclaimed work on Holy Spider, seemed to be on a promising trajectory prior to this incident.

According to various sources, Abbasi, while under the influence, allegedly groped a well-known actor, leading to his separation from his management team after extensive discussions. This serves as a reminder of the importance of moderation at industry events. In response to the allegations, Abbasi released a statement clarifying his actions.

“I wish to address the recent reports about me candidly,” he stated. “I acknowledge that my behavior made someone uncomfortable, regardless of my intentions, and I sincerely apologize.”

He described how he had interacted with the individual on multiple occasions and felt they shared a friendly rapport. During the Golden Globes party, he attempted what he deemed a playful gesture—an inappropriate slap on the back—which he insists was not meant to be sexual. Upon realizing the gravity of his miscalculation, he immediately apologized and ensured that his sentiments were communicated the following day through his team.

Abbasi denied that his departure from his agents was a direct result of this encounter, asserting that it was a strategic career choice made independently of this incident. He emphasized his commitment to taking responsibility for his actions, stating, “I made a mistake, I apologized, and I’ve learned an invaluable lesson.”

He concluded his statement by expressing gratitude for the cast, crew, and supporters of The Apprentice, hoping that their achievements would remain the focus of discussions going forward.
