2025 Spirit Awards: Complete List of Winners and Highlights

As the award season approaches its final stages, the film "Anora" achieved significant recognition at the Film Independent Spirit Awards held on Saturday, taking home three honors, including Best Feature. The film’s director, Sean Baker, was also celebrated, alongside lead actress Mikey Madison, who received accolades for her performance.

Kieran Culkin won the award for Best Supporting Performance in "A Real Pain," while Jesse Eisenberg was recognized for his screenplay for the same film. The trend has shown that the winner of the Spirit Award for Best Feature has often claimed the Oscar for Best Picture, with four out of the last ten years reflecting this pattern. Since the Spirit Awards transitioned to gender-neutral acting categories, the supporting performance winner has received an Oscar, while the lead performance winner has faced Oscar nominations but has not secured the win.

In television categories, the award for Best New Scripted Series went to "Shōgun," while "Baby Reindeer" dominated the performance categories with three wins. Host Aidy Bryant lightheartedly referred to the event as "Hollywood’s third or fourth biggest night," capturing the laid-back vibe of the afternoon ceremony, which took place in an oversized tent near the beach in Santa Monica.

Following recent wildfires that impacted Los Angeles, many awards shows faced challenges in tone and atmosphere. Bryant acknowledged the ongoing struggles, stating, “It may feel a little silly to have an awards show now, but your films matter.” She emphasized the importance of supporting filmmakers affected by the wildfires and highlighted a fund for donations.

One of the evening’s standout moments came when Sean Baker accepted his award for Best Director, delivering an impassioned speech about the challenges facing independent cinema. He expressed concern over the current state of indie film and emphasized the necessity for change to ensure sustainability. “Let’s demand what we’re worth,” Baker urged, calling for collaboration amongst filmmakers and distributors to support the independence of creative voices.

While this year’s Spirit Awards lacked the intensity of previous politically charged moments, the outside world still influenced the atmosphere. A significant acknowledgment occurred when "No Other Land," a documentary created by a collective of Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, received the award for Best Documentary. However, no representatives from the film were present to accept the honor.

Other notable speeches included those from Hunter Schafer, a trans performer nominated for her role in "Cuckoo," and Naomi Mau, who accepted the award for Best Supporting Performance for "Baby Reindeer." Both offered messages of solidarity amidst ongoing societal challenges.

Brenda Robinson, acting president of Film Independent, paid tribute to Josh Welsh, the late leader of the organization, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Following her remarks, the audience gave a heartfelt standing ovation in his memory.

The full list of winners from the Spirit Awards highlights the diverse talent and innovative storytelling present in today’s film and television landscape.
