Keanu Reeves is enthusiastic about the possibility of donning John Constantine’s iconic trench coat and tie once more. Almost two decades after first portraying the DC Comics/Vertigo character in the 2005 film “Constantine,” Reeves shared that there might finally be progress on “Constantine 2.”
Since expressing his desire for a “Constantine” sequel back in 2019, Reeves recently mentioned that the project may now be moving forward: “We’ve been trying to develop this film for over a decade, and we recently finalized a story which we pitched to DC Studios. They responded positively,” Reeves told Inverse. “Now, we’re working on writing the script.”
Although Reeves withheld specific plot information, he confirmed that he and director Francis Lawrence intend to maintain the original’s dark atmosphere for the sequel. “We’re not straying from that,” he noted, humorously implying that John Constantine will face even more tribulations: “Expect plenty more suffering for our occult hero.”
In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves and Lawrence reunited to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, discussing its legacy and potential new scripts. “It’s a thrill to be in the same room and chat about ‘Constantine,'” Reeves expressed.
Lawrence added, “Akiva [Goldsman] is currently writing, and the collaborative effort between Keanu, Akiva, and myself is yielding some truly exciting ideas. I believe we’re on the verge of creating something substantial.”
Meanwhile, although the character of Constantine hasn’t appeared in films recently, Matt Ryan has successfully portrayed him across various live-action and animated television series, including the short-lived “Constantine” NBC show during the character’s hiatus from the big screen.
