The 30th Critics Choice Awards took place on February 7 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. This prestigious event celebrates the finest achievements in film and television, and this year held a special significance.

In addition to honoring outstanding talents, the ceremony recognized the devastating wildfires that recently affected the Los Angeles region.

Chelsea Handler returned as host for her third consecutive year, taking a moment to applaud the bravery of Los Angeles firefighters. She encouraged attendees and viewers alike to support those impacted, leading a heartfelt standing ovation.

Handler addressed the audience saying, “I want to take a moment to reflect on the destruction that occurred here in Los Angeles recently.” As she spoke, the crowd stood to show their respect and solidarity, capturing the emotional weight of the situation. “The extent of the loss is something we can hardly fathom.”

In her opening monologue, Handler also infused humor into the night, making playful comments related to films such as Wicked and It Ends With Us, as well as poking fun at her own hosting experience.

“This is my third year hosting… which officially makes it my second-longest relationship!” she quipped, bringing laughter to the audience.

A variety of awards were presented throughout the evening, celebrating exceptional talents across the industry.

Anora, directed by Sean Baker, took home the coveted ‘Best Picture’ award. This win was unexpected, especially given its competition from Emilia Perez, a film with the highest Oscar nominations this year.

In his acceptance speech, Baker expressed his surprise, saying, “This is incredibly unexpected… my imposter syndrome is through the roof right now.”

One of the evening’s standout moments came when Jon M. Chu received the award for ‘Best Director’ for his work on the film adaptation of the musical Wicked. This recognition was astonishing, particularly since he was overlooked for an Oscar nomination in the same category.

Chu shared his appreciation with the audience, stating, “I love directing. We have the privilege to share stories that matter… I am honored to be here among you, telling these stories.” He was joined at the event by cast members and crew such as Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Other notable awards included ‘Best Actress,’ awarded to Demi Moore for her performance in The Substance. This marked Moore’s first-ever acting award, which she also received at this year’s Golden Globes.

Adrian Brody won ‘Best Actor’ for his role in The Brutalist, a performance that has also earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor this season.

The 30th Critics Choice Awards were a celebration of artistic achievement and a moment to express gratitude for the Los Angeles community, blending recognition for talent with an acknowledgment of resilience in the face of recent adversity.
