Brave New World Reflects the Winter Soldier

Brave New World Reflects the Winter Soldier

Caution! This article contains SPOILERS for Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World offers several intriguing parallels with its 2014 predecessor, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Set in the contemporary Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Steve Rogers faced significant modern challenges while exposing a deep-seated conspiracy involving SHIELD, Hydra, and his close friend Bucky Barnes. In a similar vein, Sam Wilson’s Captain America embarks on his own journey, uncovering a political conspiracy that includes the President of the United States and his terrifying transformation into the Red Hulk.

Moreover, Brave New World can be viewed as a sequel to The Incredible Hulk, revisiting elements and characters from the 2008 film that had long been out of sight. At the same time, the film incorporates key storytelling methods seen in The Winter Soldier. Below are the major similarities between these two Captain America films.

1. Government-Led Missions Open Both Movies

In The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers leads a government-sanctioned SHIELD operation to rescue hostages aboard The Lemurian Star, which has been taken over by the mercenary Batroc. He successfully completes the mission with the help of Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. This operation initiates a chain of events that leads to the revelation of Hydra’s infiltration in SHIELD.

In Brave New World, Sam Wilson similarly commands a mission against a mercenary group named SERPENT, tasked with stealing a sample of adamantium from Japan. This operation, too, serves as the first step in a larger conspiracy involving President Ross and his hidden secrets, with Joaquin Torres joining as the new Falcon.

2. The Same Trio of Heroes Returns

In the earlier film, Steve Rogers is left with limited allies due to Hydra’s deceit, primarily relying on Black Widow and Falcon. Brave New World mirrors this dynamic: Sam Wilson now stands as Captain America, alongside Torres as the new Falcon and Ruth-Bat Seraph—an ex-Black Widow trained in the infamous Red Room, much like Natasha and Yelena Belova.

3. Mind Control Plays a Major Role

The Winter Soldier introduces Bucky Barnes, who becomes the Winter Soldier after years of Hydra’s brainwashing, manipulated by trigger words. Thankfully, these triggers are eventually neutralized with help from Wakanda. In Brave New World, Samuel Sterns uses a mind manipulation device—combining visuals and audio cues—echoing the same themes of control and memory manipulation, reminding Sam of Bucky’s troubled past.

4. Car Attacks in Broad Daylight

Sam Wilson faces an attack in broad daylight while investigating political manipulations involving Isiah Bradley. The assailant, Sidewinder, represents a clear parallel to Bucky’s ambush on Nick Fury in The Winter Soldier, both executed at the behest of secret orders.

5. Supervillains in Hidden Bases

As Steve Rogers and Natasha dig deeper, they uncover the digitized mind of Hydra’s genius, Armin Zola, in a concealed base beneath Camp Lehigh. Similarly, Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres discover the gamma-powered intellect of Samuel Sterns, who has been held captive for years, secretly preparing for revenge.

6. Major Political Conspiracies Uncovered

Both films center around significant conspiracy plots. The Winter Soldier reveals Hydra’s manipulation of SHIELD for Project Insight, while Brave New World showcases Samuel Sterns’ revenge scheme against President Ross, aiming to instigate global chaos and showcasing Ross’s transformation into the Red Hulk.

7. A Large-Scale Battle

The climax of The Winter Soldier features a massive aerial battle involving Hydra-controlled helicarriers. In Brave New World, U.S. and Japanese forces are on the brink of conflict over the precious resource of adamantium, with Sam and Joaquin working to restore peace by neutralizing a dangerous scenario crafted by Sterns.

8. Climactic One-on-One Showdowns

Both films culminate in intense 1v1 battles. In The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers confronts Bucky; in Brave New World, Sam faces off against President Ross in his intimidating Red Hulk form.

9. Antagonists Faced with Reason

Unlike straightforward battles, both films see their antagonists confronted with reason. Steve’s attempts reach Bucky, prompting him to save his friend, while Sam’s victory over Ross encourages the latter to strive for redemption.

10. Post-Credits Scenes Hint at Bigger Conflicts Ahead

Both films leverage their post-credits scenes to set the stage for upcoming Avengers features. The Winter Soldier hints at the creation of new threats, while Brave New World teases multiversal conflicts in future Avengers titles.

Captain America: Brave New World continues the legacy of its predecessors while laying the groundwork for future MCU narratives. The film is currently being screened in theaters by Marvel Studios.
