Accidental Death of KCAL News Anchor Chauncy Glover Confirmed

Chauncy Glover, an Emmy-winning news anchor, tragically passed away at the age of 39, with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner concluding that his death was accidental due to drug intoxication. According to a recent statement from the medical examiner’s office, Glover’s death resulted from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of chloroethane and methamphetamine.”

On November 5, Glover was found unresponsive at his residence, and emergency responders pronounced him dead shortly after midnight. Following an examination by a deputy medical examiner, relevant tests were conducted, leading to the confirmation of the cause and manner of death this week. A detailed medical examiner’s report is anticipated to be released by the end of March.

Chloroethane, also known as ethyl chloride, is a colorless gas with a notable odor and is used in various applications, including as a solvent and in pharmaceuticals, as noted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The circumstances of how Glover might have been exposed to the substance remain unclear.

Glover joined the CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles, KCAL News, in October 2023, where he co-anchored the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Pat Harvey, and the 8 and 10 p.m. newscasts with Suzie Suh. Prior to this role, he made history as the first main Black male anchor at KTRK in Houston, where he worked for eight years, and also reported for stations in cities such as Columbus, Georgia; Jacksonville, Florida; and Detroit.

In a statement following his passing, Glover’s family highlighted his significant contributions to the community, particularly through his philanthropic efforts. “Chauncy’s compassion and dedication to helping others, especially through the Chauncy Glover Project, changed countless lives and inspired many young men to pursue their dreams,” they expressed. The Chauncy Glover Project, which he founded, aimed to mentor and empower young men to become strong leaders in society.

CBS Stations honored Glover, describing him as “a bright light,” and extended their condolences to his family during this difficult time.
