Dave Bautista States That Drax from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Has Completed Its Journey, Yet He’s Open to Returning to the Role

Dave Bautista, known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expressed a willingness to revisit his character if James Gunn were to reach out. However, he believes Drax’s journey has come to an end.

In a recent interview, the former WWE wrestler shared his thoughts, stating that he feels the character “has run its course” and is instead interested in exploring other comic book roles.

“Drax is off the table for me. Unless James Gunn called and asked me to step into Drax’s shoes again, I wouldn’t be interested,” Bautista shared with ComicBook. “If James were to call—though I doubt that will happen since he’s charted a new path—I’d consider it.”

Gunn’s new role as co-head of DC Studios makes the likelihood of a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy film happening in the near future slim. Nonetheless, Bautista is keen on the idea of playing a different character in either the Marvel or DC universe.

“I really want to be part of that universe. I’m a fan of comics and everything within that realm,” Bautista said. “I’ve communicated this to James and the Russo brothers. I told them directly, ‘Don’t overlook me. If there’s a role I might fit, I’m totally open to the idea.’ I just feel that Drax’s story has reached its conclusion.”

Bautista first brought the live-action version of Drax to life in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by Gunn. He continued to reprise this role in two sequels, one in 2017 and the final installment of the trilogy in 2023.

Additionally, he portrayed Drax in the Russo brothers’ blockbuster films Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Most recently, he returned to the role in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is currently developing a fifth Avengers movie, slated for release in 2026. However, it remains uncertain whether the Guardians of the Galaxy characters will make an appearance in this upcoming film.
