Anikó Návai, a renowned journalist celebrated for her extensive coverage of Hollywood, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. Throughout her impressive career, she emerged as a prominent voice in Hungarian entertainment journalism.
Návai was born in Szeged in 1948 and graduated from Eötvös Loránd University in 1973. She began her career in journalism as an editor at Magyar Rádió. In 1981, she relocated to the United States with her husband, György Skorka, initially settling in Miami and later moving to New York. In 2000, she made history as the first Hungarian member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a position she held until 2023.
During her career, Návai interviewed many notable Hollywood stars and contributed to a variety of media platforms, including Magyar Televízió, TV2, and AMC. In 2023, she briefly wrote for Budapest Reporter.
Návai’s career was not without controversy. In 2021, she faced public backlash after submitting an interview with Scarlett Johansson that was later found to have been sourced from elsewhere. While she insisted that the decision to publish it as it appeared was made by the editorial team, further scrutiny revealed that issues of plagiarism had surfaced throughout her career. She departed from the HFPA in 2023 amid allegations of misconduct, stating that her resignation was a personal choice.
Despite these challenges, Návai remained a significant presence in Hungarian entertainment journalism, with a career marked by both remarkable accomplishments and controversies that ultimately defined her legacy.
