Kamala Harris to Be Honored with Chairman’s Award at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to be honored with the NAACP’s prestigious Chairman’s Award during the upcoming 2025 NAACP Image Awards. This award is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to public service and have effectively used their influence to inspire social change.

Recipients of this distinguished award in the past include notable personalities such as Samuel L. Jackson, Tyler Perry, and Amanda Gorman, among others.

Kamala Harris has made history as the first Black and South Asian woman to serve as vice president and a major party’s presidential nominee. After President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign, Harris was elevated to the top spot on the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket. Although she ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump, she garnered over 75 million votes within a campaign that spanned approximately 100 days.

Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP board of directors, stated, “Vice President Kamala Harris is a remarkable leader and a force for change. Her unwavering dedication to justice and equality makes it an honor to present her with the Chairman’s Award. Her legacy is rooted in courage and compassion, and she continuously uplifts the most vulnerable in our society, becoming a symbol of hope and progress.”

Throughout her vice presidency, Harris has championed critical issues such as reproductive rights, gun safety, and economic opportunities. Her previous roles as U.S. senator and California Attorney General saw her advocate for housing relief, healthcare access, and criminal justice reform.

Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, remarked, “Vice President Harris exemplifies the resilience and determination that Black women have historically contributed to the United States. She boldly advocates for justice and amplifies the voices of marginalized communities. Her leadership reminds us that when Black women take charge, it elevates society as a whole.”

While the future of her political career remains uncertain, there is speculation that she may run for California governor in 2026, or even consider another presidential run in 2028. Since leaving office, she has returned to California, engaging in recovery efforts for communities impacted by recent wildfires. Her involvement includes participation in benefit events aimed at supporting recovery efforts.

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards will not only honor Harris but also contribute to relief efforts for communities impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles. The NAACP, alongside BET Media Group and various local organizations, has initiated the Altadena Community Preservation Fund to help protect homeowners from displacement and preserve cultural heritage in the affected areas.

The 56th NAACP Image Awards is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The event will be broadcast live on BET and CBS, with honors also presented in non-televised categories from February 18-19 and during the Creative Honors on February 21.
