Miami Vice ’85: Man with Knife Takes Crew Hostage Before Being Arrested on Set

A man was taken into custody on Friday night after brandishing a knife during an altercation with a crew member on the Brooklyn set of the upcoming film Miami Vice ’85, featuring stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Alex Perez from Brooklyn, was arrested shortly after 11 p.m. in the area of Avenue N and McDonald Avenue, which is adjacent to Washington Cemetery, as per reports from the New York City Police Department. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that this incident transpired on the film’s set.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, a 42-year-old man reported having a heated argument with Perez, who then displayed a knife during the encounter.

Authorities indicated that Perez was apprehended without further incident, and the weapon was recovered. Fortunately, there were no injuries involved in the situation. He faces charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

TMZ released footage showing Perez being escorted away by a production staff member, after which he revealed a large knife concealed within his sweatshirt. Reports also indicate that Perez has a troubling history, including five prior arrests for alleged gang-related activities, firearm assault, burglary, and other charges.

Earlier this month, Universal Pictures unveiled the first-look images of Butler as Sonny Crockett and Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs. The actors have been spotted on location filming in both New Jersey and New York City, including Jordan who was seen shooting scenes in New York on Friday.

Miami Vice ’85 is a modern adaptation of the classic 1980s NBC crime drama that originally featured Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, the film also stars Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, and Walton Goggins, among others. The film is set for release in theaters on May 19, 2028.
