Quentin Tarantino Presents First 17 Minutes of ‘Cliff Booth’ at AFI Fest

Quentin Tarantino delighted fans at a Q&A session and screening of his critically acclaimed film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on Friday at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles. He treated attendees to an exclusive preview of the first 17 minutes of his sequel, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.

This marked the inaugural public unveiling of the follow-up film, which Tarantino wrote and was directed by David Fincher. Brad Pitt reprises his Oscar-winning role as Cliff Booth, the stuntman and confidant of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Rick Dalton, from the original 2019 film.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is set for a theatrical release on November 25 and will later be available on Netflix starting December 23.

During the Q&A at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Tarantino hinted at the surprise, saying, “I could talk a little bit about The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, or I could show you the first 17 minutes.” As Tarantino stood up, the audience immediately sensed something exciting was about to happen.

The story picks up in 1977, moving forward from the 1969 setting of Hollywood. The new narrative suggests that Los Angeles no longer requires a hippie-slaying stuntman, but Hollywood continues to have its share of challenges that only someone with Booth’s unique (sometimes legally questionable) skills can resolve. When not working behind the bar or as a projectionist, Cliff takes on the role of a fixer, addressing the needs of both celebrated and less reputable figures in the industry.

The film also features a talented cast, including Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian.

Anticipation for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth has been rising since it was announced in 2024 that Pitt and Fincher would collaborate on a project originally intended for Tarantino to direct. Fincher noted that he had to trim 60 pages from the 230-page script he received from Tarantino, describing it as “essentially two movies.”

The final cut of the film is around two and a half hours long.

During the AFI Fest event, Tarantino also discussed his upcoming play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which is set to debut in London’s West End next spring, featuring Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role. The play will begin previews on February 23 and officially open on March 18 at the Phoenix Theatre.
