Disney is returning to the vibrant world of Descendants for a fifth installment. The new film will take place after the events of the upcoming Descendants: The Rise of Red, slated for release in 2024. Fan favorites Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker will reprise their roles as Red and Chloe, daughters of the iconic Queen of Hearts and Cinderella, respectively. Leonardo Nam will also return as Maddox Hatter.
Filming for this new chapter is set to begin shortly, with the movie scheduled to debut on both the Disney Channel and Disney+. Kimmy Gatewood, known for her work on Girls5eva, will direct this installment, while Tamara Chestna, alongside Rise of Red writers Dan Frey and Ru Sommer, will craft the screenplay.
Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis expressed excitement about the franchise, remarking, “The love for the Descendants series runs deep, and the overwhelming response to Descendants: The Rise of Red last year showcased just how much audiences cherish these characters and their journeys. Our upcoming film aims to enhance that legacy and provide even more of the enchantment, music, and emotional depth that make Descendants so unique — all brought to life by a fantastic cast and creative team who continue to expand this universe in fresh and thrilling ways.”
Tentatively titled Descendants 5, the film promises to explore “what ‘happily ever after’ truly means for Red and Chloe after their time-traveling escapades.” Set primarily in modern-day Wonderland, the sequel will address the forewarning presented at the end of the previous film: “There are consequences when you alter the fabric of time.”
In addition to Cantrall, Baker, and Nam, the cast will feature Liamani Segura as Red’s sister Pink, Brendon Tremblay as Max Hatter, Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal, and Kiara Romero as Hazel Hook.
Executive producers Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh will oversee the project, with Gatewood and Chestna serving as co-executive producers. Choreography for the film’s musical and dance numbers will be in the skilled hands of Emilio Dosal, known for his work on Wicked and Sneakerella.
