Mirjána Balogh’s Animated Movie Takes Home the Crystal Bear at Berlinale

Mirjána Balogh’s animated short film, Wish You Were Ear, has garnered the prestigious Crystal Bear for Best Short Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. Created as part of the Animation program at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) with support from the National Film Institute (NFI), the film was featured in the Generation 14+ category.

This 11-minute film presents a unique narrative where broken relationships force couples to exchange body parts. This imaginative concept delves into the intricate ways in which relationships influence personal identity, both physically and emotionally. Mirjána Balogh shared her vision for the film, stating, "I aimed to depict how we deal with the changes brought about by past relationships and how these alterations become intertwined with our self-perception."

The production of the film involved collaboration among current and former students at MOME. The sound design was skillfully created by József Iszlai, with editing by Judit Czakó and production led by József Fülöp. The distribution and festival submissions are being overseen by the MOME Film Knowledge Center in partnership with NFI.

Berlinale’s Generation section is known for showcasing films that resonate with younger audiences through innovative storytelling and cinematic techniques. Since 2017, MOME Animation graduation films have consistently been selected for competition at the festival, following in the footsteps of notable works like Réka Bucsi’s Symphony No. 42 (2012) and Flóra Anna Buda’s Entropia (2019).

In 2023, MOME Animation launched an international curriculum taught in English, now offering specializations in game design and immersive storytelling, in addition to traditional film directing.
