Utopia is intensifying its content acquisition and partnership efforts with the recent appointment of Charlie Sextro as Senior Vice President of Acquisitions & Business Development. Previously, Sextro spent 13 years as a Senior Film Programmer and Curator at the Sundance Film Festival.
This strategic hire aims to enhance Utopia’s initiatives in distribution, production, and technology. Sextro’s extensive experience at Sundance involved curating a prestigious program from a vast pool of over 4,000 feature film submissions each year, ultimately selecting around 100 films while fostering relationships with filmmakers, studios, and influential industry figures.
Robert Schwartzman, Co-Founder of Utopia, expressed his enthusiasm for Sextro’s addition, highlighting Sundance’s role in nurturing some of the most innovative and celebrated filmmakers in the industry. “Charlie’s keen eye for recognizing bold storytellers makes him a valuable asset to our team,” Schwartzman stated.
Currently, Utopia boasts a portfolio of 140 feature films and recently celebrated significant success with Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” which garnered multi-million dollar box office results and multiple award nominations, including categories for Best Original Song, Lead Actress, and Supporting Actress.
As the competitive landscape of the film industry evolves, Schwartzman emphasized the importance of adaptability and unconventional growth strategies. He highlighted that Sextro’s experience provides valuable insight into a continuously shifting market, allowing Utopia to explore new partnerships and expansion opportunities.
Beyond programming, Sextro has held various operational roles at Sundance, including producing the Sundance NEXT Fest and launching a touring short film lab. His role at Utopia will empower him to devise and implement new acquisition strategies.
During his tenure at Sundance, Sextro curated various segments and supported the work of acclaimed contemporary filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler, Chloé Zhao, and Jordan Peele. His diverse career also includes positions as Editor-in-Chief of the streaming platform “DOCUMENTARY+,” programming for events like the Red Bull Music Festival, and gaining experience in film acquisitions at Tartan Films USA and Paramount Vantage.
“I am eager to enter this new chapter of my career, addressing the challenges facing filmmakers and industry partners during these unpredictable times,” Sextro shared. “I believe that indie film is far from dead, and there’s an exciting opportunity for filmmakers to get creative with distribution. Utopia is in a unique position to support filmmakers who share that vision.”
Utopia’s co-founders, Schwartzman and Cole Harper, are also focused on developing several technology solutions, such as PowerFlix and Altavod, which aim to provide filmmakers with flexible options for aggregation, self-distribution, and professional distribution services.
“With the explosion of films being produced every year, filmmakers need to understand their distribution options and how they align with their goals,” Harper explained. “Charlie’s expertise will help us present filmmakers with viable distribution solutions that meet their needs.”
