SPC Acquires Jodie Foster’s Film Vie Privée for North and Latin America

One of the first major announcements at the European Film Market has come from Sony Pictures Classics (“I’m Still Here”), which has acquired the highly anticipated, humor-filled murder mystery film “Vie Privée.” The film stars Jodie Foster and is directed by Rebecca Zlotowski (“Other People’s Children”) for distribution in North America and Latin America.

Foster portrays renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner, who undertakes a private investigation into the death of one of her patients, convinced that it was a murder. This marks Foster’s return to French-language films after 20 years, since her role in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Oscar-nominated “A Very Long Engagement.”

Recently, Foster won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance in HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.” In “Vie Privée,” she stars alongside a talented international cast that includes Daniel Auteuil (“Farewell, Mr. Haffman”), Rebecca Efira (“Other People’s Children”), Mathieu Amalric (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”), Vincent Lacoste (“Lost Illusions”), and Luana Bajrami (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”).

Filmed in Paris and Normandy, “Vie Privée” is currently in post-production and is expected to have its world premiere at film festivals.

“Vie Privée” represents the first collaboration between Sony Pictures Classics and Zlotowski, one of France’s most acclaimed directors. Zlotowski previously directed “Other People’s Children,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, along with works such as “Une fille facile” (Cannes’ Directors Fortnight 2019), “Planetarium” (Venice 2016) featuring Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp, and “Grand Central” (Cannes’ Un Certain Regard 2013) as well as “Belle Epine” (Cannes’ Critics Week 2010) starring Léa Seydoux. She co-wrote the script for “Vie Privée” with Anne Berest (“Happening”) and Gaëlle Macé.

Goodfellas presented a promotional preview of this film at the EFM and has secured nearly worldwide distribution. Ad Vitam will handle the release in France. The film reunites Zlotowski with her longtime producer, Frédéric Jouve of Les Films Velvet.

Sony Pictures Classics has begun the year strongly with “I’m Still Here,” directed by Walter Salles, which is nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Fernanda Torres. The distributor has also announced additional international release dates for the film across Latin America and Europe. Currently, they are presenting Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” a much-anticipated competition entry featuring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott at the Berlinale.

“Vie Privée” adds to Sony Pictures Classics’ collection of recent acquisitions, which also includes “East of Wall,” the debut feature from writer and director Kate Beecroft that won the Audience Award at Sundance in the NEXT category.
