The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards have spotlighted The Brutalist, a film that has not only enthralled global audiences but also significantly impacted the Hungarian film scene. We take immense pride in the remarkable contributions made by the skilled Hungarian crew who played a vital role in bringing this exceptional project to fruition.
Filming for The Brutalist was conducted over a 34-day period, from March 16 to May 5, 2023, with principal photography occurring in Budapest, Hungary, and Carrara, Italy. Originally announced in 2020 with a different cast, the film encountered several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a significant recasting in 2023. Despite these challenges, the creative vision remained intact, leading to a film that is now being celebrated for its artistic achievements.
Hungary played an essential role in the production of The Brutalist, with at least 73 Hungarian crew members participating in crucial departments such as cinematography, editing, production management, art direction, sound design, stunts, and camera operations. Their expertise significantly enhanced the film’s visual and technical accomplishments, reaffirming Budapest’s status as a premier location for high-quality film production.
Among the film’s standout features is its incorporation of VistaVision, a widescreen format that utilizes horizontal 35mm film to achieve exceptional resolution and depth. The film was released on 70mm prints, marking a historic milestone as the first American film shot entirely in this format in 61 years. Director Brady Corbet’s choice to employ VistaVision pays homage to the aesthetic and engineering innovations of the 1950s, solidifying the film’s period authenticity.
The accolades received by The Brutalist at the BAFTAs—including Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Leading Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score—highlight the extraordinary collaborative effort that characterized this production. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the entire cast and crew, especially our Hungarian collaborators, whose commitment and artistry continue to enhance Budapest’s reputation as a leading filmmaking destination.
