Stephen King is an incredibly prolific author, known for his extensive body of work that includes many beloved projects. This makes it easy to overlook some of his less successful endeavors. The same applies to the films adapted from his short stories and novels; there are so many excellent ones that the less successful adaptations often fade from memory. For every film like Dreamcatcher or Firestarter, we also have classics like Carrie, Gerald’s Game, and The Shining.
However, we do think about the lesser works. In fact, we’ve compiled a list of the worst adaptations. For an author as cherished as King, whose writing is often quite cinematic, there are a surprising number of poor film adaptations that might lead you to question the quality of the original material (which is usually not the case). That said, it’s interesting to revisit these disappointing movies to analyze what went wrong and what could have been done better.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the most notable failures in what is otherwise a notably flawed cinematic universe. There are likely many more poorly made films based on King’s work, but we’re focusing on ten of them, ranging from the mid-1980s to just a few years ago. These stories encompass everything from alien invasions and werewolves to werecats, cell phone zombies, and yes, even evil sentient machines. While we don’t have a definitive explanation for why some movies are so successful while others are not, perhaps clues can be found among all the gore, jump scares, and unsettling clown makeup.
