Exploring the Depths of Memory and Truth in Lex Julia
Lex Julia, the latest film from Finnish writer and director Laura Hyppönen, blends trauma, emotion, and suspense into a gripping narrative set against the stark backdrop of an isolated island. This feature film digs deep into themes of memory and truth, capturing the complexities of human experience.
Scheduled to premiere on November 13 at Estonia’s 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), where it will compete in the Baltic Film Competition, Lex Julia is also set to grace the screens at the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina later that month. The film stars Rea Lest, Christian Hillborg, and Jessica Grabowsky, recognized for their performances in notable works like The Last Kingdom, Fleabag, and Tom of Finland.
Hyppönen describes Lex Julia as a post-#MeToo narrative centered on a rape survivor who unexpectedly encounters the man from her past years after their contentious encounter. "Set in the intense atmosphere of an isolated island, the film delves into the conflicting perspectives of the victim, the alleged assailant, and his wife," she explains.
As the plot unfolds, difficult questions arise: Was the past encounter a fleeting moment of passion or a traumatic event? Is the protagonist a victim or merely acting out of cowardice?
Hyppönen’s creative process for the film drew from her own experiences, which she took years to transform into a character-driven suspense story. "In Lex Julia, I aimed to subvert expectations within the rape-revenge genre. While the potential for violence looms in the narrative, the characters formulate unexpected strategies to navigate the tension. The film invites viewers to reconsider deeply ingrained, often subconscious beliefs surrounding sexual violence and questions the distribution of shame and responsibility," she adds.
The film begins peacefully, as Julia, a music producer in her early thirties, visits her friend Anna at her island villa, anticipating a relaxing weekend. However, the tranquility is shattered when Anna’s husband, JP, arrives — a man from Julia’s past. This unexpected reunion forces buried memories to resurface, intensifying the dynamic among the three characters.
Lex Julia is a collaborative effort between Finland, Poland, Estonia, and Sweden, set for a theatrical release in Finland by StoryHill in January. The film showcases the striking cinematography of Malte Rosenfeld and is edited by Agata Cierniak. It is produced by Greenlit Productions in cooperation with several other production houses, bringing together a diverse team behind the scenes.
Producer Merja Ritola remarked, "From the start, Lex Julia confronts a vital contemporary issue: the multifaceted nature of trauma and the arduous quest for truth amid fractured memories. Laura Hyppönen has crafted a visceral and emotionally rich cinematic experience that deliberately avoids oversimplified resolutions while sustaining the engrossing suspense characteristic of the genre."
Maarit Mäeveer, CEO of Baltic Crime, highlighted the film’s potent international cast and riveting storyline. "Its exploration of the intricacies of human relationships comes at a critical time in our cultural landscape, where discussions about abusive behavior and gender violence are more essential than ever," she stated.
