Ralph Fiennes is set to take on the dual roles of star and executive producer in the upcoming theatrical feature Unbeaten, produced by House Productions, StudioCanal, and Escapade Pictures, known for their work on Conclave.
In this film, Fiennes will portray the renowned racehorse trainer Henry Cecil during the latter part of his life, where he confronts his past setbacks, rekindles his romance with Jane, and forms a significant partnership with the legendary racehorse Frankel. Under Cecil’s guidance, Frankel became an iconic champion, finishing his career undefeated in 14 races, culminating in a triumphant win at the prestigious Champion Stakes held at Ascot Racecourse.
The film, which is currently in advanced development, is based on a screenplay written by Bash Doran and will be directed by BAFTA award winner Nora Fingscheidt, recognized for her film Outrun. Fiennes expressed his fascination with Henry Cecil’s complex character, stating, “I knew nothing about the legendary Henry Cecil until I read Bash Doran’s screenplay. His story with Frankel captivated me. Henry was — and still is — a unique figure, marked by his competitiveness in the specialized realm of horse racing,” reflecting on his experience after receiving an Oscar nomination for his role in Edward Berger’s drama.
Fiennes’s illustrious career also includes performances in classic films such as Wuthering Heights, Quiz Show, The English Patient, Schindler’s List, In Bruges, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Menu.
Unbeaten will bring Fiennes together once more with Tessa Ross from House Productions, who previously collaborated with him on Conclave. The film’s production will also include Rory Aitken of Escapade Pictures and 42. StudioCanal is fully financing the project, taking charge of worldwide sales, and planning to release Unbeaten in markets including the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Benelux, Australia, and New Zealand.
The film is further supported in its development by BBC Film and Access Entertainment, which also backed Conclave and The Zone of Interest. Executive producers for the movie include Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, Joe Naftalin, Fiennes, and Doran.
