On February 16, 2025, the 78th BAFTA Awards were held, hosted by the delightful David Tennant. This prestigious event celebrates the finest achievements in British film and television, paying tribute to exceptional talent in areas such as acting, directing, and producing.

Tennant, making his second appearance as the host, kicked off the evening with a comical monologue brimming with clever industry references and light-hearted dad jokes.

Among the prestigious awards presented were Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Leading Actor, and Leading Actress.

Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, clinched the award for ‘Best Film’. This critically acclaimed movie led the night with multiple nominations, securing wins for ‘Outstanding British Film,’ ‘Best Adapted Screenplay,’ and ‘Best Editing.’ It is also in the running for eight Oscars this year.

In his acceptance speech for ‘Best Film,’ Berger expressed his gratitude to his screenwriter, Peter Straughan.

“First and foremost, about seven years ago, I came across a script by Peter Straughan… I had never encountered anything so rich with soul as what he had created… Thank you, Peter, for sharing your magnificent script. You are an incredible man and an extraordinary writer,” Berger shared.

Continuing the celebration, Mikey Madison received the ‘Leading Actress’ award for her performance in Anora. After earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role, Madison finally took home an accolade recognizing her talent.

“Wow, I definitely didn’t see this coming. I probably should have listened to my publicist and prepared a speech!” Madison joked during her acceptance speech. Additionally, Anora won the award for ‘Best Casting.’

Adrian Brody also had a triumphant evening, winning the ‘Leading Actor’ award for his role in The Brutalist.

Brody conveyed his appreciation, stating, “This award reflects the collective efforts of our director, Brady Corbet, and the entire production team… I dedicate this honor to the quest of leaving a meaningful legacy.” He previously received a similar honor for ‘Best Actor’ at the Critics Choice Awards, and The Brutalist is nominated for nine Oscars.

The 78th BAFTA Awards highlighted the extraordinary talents and creative artistry in film, illustrating the power of collaboration within the industry. As the 2025 awards season progresses, these victories pave the way for what is to come at the Oscars.
